I Tried 4 Ways to Clean My Absolutely Disgusting Shower Door

One of them involved a dryer sheet. Things have gotten desperate.

Alrighty hunnies, before I start this article, I want to say something that I hope carries through every category and every little corner of Calamity, Meet Jane:

We do not judge here.

This is a judgment-free zone. We help, we love, and most importantly, we do not judge.

Because whether we’re talking about faith, food, homemaking, cleaning, motherhood, money, or the shower door you’ve strategically avoided making eye contact with for seven years—we’re all learning something.

Now that we’ve established that…

Let me show y’all my absolutely disgusting shower door.

She’s Older Than I Am

A little backstory.

I have a glass shower door that is original to my house, which was built in…

1992.

Hunnies, this shower door is older than I am by about half a decade.

When we moved in seven years ago, there was already some buildup on the glass. I cleaned it every so often.

Apparently, not often enough.

Because over the years, it seemed to get worse and worse.

I’ve tried numerous products. Cleaning supplies. Home remedies. Heck, some things that aren’t even technically cleaning supplies.

Nothing has gotten me anywhere.

So I did what any sane—or, at this point, semi-sane—woman would do.

I called my grandmother.

“What in the WORLD do I try?!”

Her answer?

Vinegar and blue Dawn dish soap.

Okay, Mamaw. Noted.

Then I did some research of my own and found people swearing that you can take a dryer sheet, run it under warm water, wipe down the glass, and watch the soap scum disappear.

A dryer sheet.

At this point, why not?

And after the success I had using The Pink Stuff on my kitchen sink, I thought to myself:

Self… if that stuff worked miracles over there, why wouldn’t it work over here?

That’s when I realized I had almost everything I needed to conduct myself a little science experiment.

Welcome to Jane’s Laboratory

I gathered my supplies and divided the shower door into four sections.

Each quadrant got its own contender:

  • Vinegar + blue Dawn
  • The Pink Stuff Paste
  • A warm, wet dryer sheet
  • Our trusty glass cleaner

And I went to work.

Quick Jane safety note: We’re conducting a science experiment, hunnies, not trying to blow the bathroom up. I tested each method separately and rinsed the glass thoroughly between products. Please don’t mix cleaning products together, and always follow the directions and safety warnings on whatever you’re using.

Honestly, I was a little worried that one of them—especially The Pink Stuff—was going to work too well.

I had visions of one crystal-clear square sitting in the middle of this cloudy shower door, exposing just how bad the rest of it was.

Then I’d have to figure out how to get all four sections equally clean.

What a problem that would’ve been.

If only.

And the Winner Is…

Nobody.

NOT. ONE. OF. THEM. WORKED.

Not one.

No magical clean quadrant.

No “Okay, this one definitely did better than the others.”

No little patch of glass so shiny that I could finally see through it.

I basically scrubbed four different sections of my shower door four different ways just to end up with…

the same dang shower door.

The glass looked at my little science experiment and said:

“Cute.”

So… Now What?

Well, now I’m posting a picture of this shower door on the whole wide internet, which somehow makes it feel approximately 47 times more disgusting than it did when it was just sitting peacefully in my bathroom.

But that’s why we’re doing this.

Somebody else has a shower door that looks like mine.

Somebody else has scrubbed and scrubbed and wondered why nothing seems to work.

And somebody else might be looking at hers thinking, Well shoot, at least I’m not the only one.

You aren’t.

And we’re gonna figure this sucker out.

This is Part One of hopefully ONLY two parts.

I’m going back in with some different ideas, and hopefully at least one of the next things I try will finally make a difference.

And if none of those work either?

Well…

I reckon we’ll have Part Three.

Until then, little ladies, if you’ve fought this battle and actually WON, drop me a comment and tell me your mystery miracle product.

Because clearly…I am accepting applications.

Grace for the mess. Grit for the rest. 💗
