So I ditched my daily cleaning schedule for a weekly menu. I reckon we’ll see how this goes.

I love a clean house.
What I do not love is working all week just to wake up Saturday and realize I’ve apparently clocked in for my second job.
Laundry. Bathrooms. Floors. Kitchen. Clutter. All the little things everybody walked past all week suddenly staring me in the face.
There goes Saturday.
So, naturally, I decided I needed a cleaning schedule.
Monday, do this. Wednesday, clean that. Thursday, tackle this.
It looked beautiful on paper.
There was just one problem:
Wednesday Jane does not care what Sunday Jane planned.
Some days I have the time and energy to knock something out. Other days, everybody gets fed and bathed and I consider that a successful contribution to society.
Then I’d miss one scheduled task and immediately feel behind.
And I’m starting to realize maybe I don’t need another schedule to fall behind on.
So I’m Trying a Weekly Cleaning Menu
Instead of deciding when everything has to happen, I’m deciding what needs to happen sometime this week.
Something like:
☐ Two loads of laundry
☐ Guest bathroom reset
☐ Kitchen reset
☐ 15-minute declutter
☐ One problem-area reset
☐ Floors
☐ One bigger house project
Then?
Pick something.
Got 15 minutes? Grab something small.
Feeling froggy? Tackle the bigger project.
Running on fumes? Do the bare minimum and keep everybody alive.
I’m trying to match the job to the time and energy I actually have instead of pretending Thursday at 6 p.m. is always going to look the way Sunday-me imagined it would.
There Are a Few Rules
Missed ≠ Owed.
This one might be the most important.
If Tuesday goes sideways, I don’t owe Wednesday twice the work.
Nothing needs “made up.”
Look at the menu. Pick back up. Keep going.
Something beats nothing.
Ten minutes still counts.
One load of laundry still counts.
Cleaning the toilet without turning it into a two-hour bathroom deep clean still counts.
And apparently I need a stopping rule, too.
Because my problem isn’t only doing nothing when I’m unmotivated.
Give me one good burst of motivation and suddenly I’m pulling everything out of cabinets like I’m starring in a home makeover show nobody asked for.
Then I wear myself slap out.
So I’m also practicing stopping while I still have some gas in the tank.
Wild concept.
What Am I Actually Trying to Accomplish?
Not a spotless house.
Not a house that looks like nobody lives here.
And definitely not becoming the woman who wipes her baseboards every Tuesday at precisely 6:15.
I just want our home clean enough that we can enjoy it without needing an entire weekend to recover it.
That’s the experiment.
I’m going to give this weekly-menu business a real-life try and pay attention to what actually happens.
What do I keep up with?
What do I avoid?
Does having a choice make me more consistent?
Does Saturday finally feel like Saturday?
Or does this whole thing go completely off the rails?
🎀 So, What Does Jane Reckon?
⏳ VERDICT PENDING
I’m not about to tell y’all I’ve found the magical cleaning routine when I’ve barely taken her for a test drive.
So meet me back here after I’ve actually lived with it awhile.
Either I’ll have reclaimed my weekends…
or we’ll have ourselves another calamity.
I reckon we’re about to find out.
